We're the Kids in America *

If you thought that was mad, try this other story from the San Francisco Chronicle:

"Mother shut boy in basement to protect him from pit bull
12-year-old was killed by family dog; owner sees death as tragic accident
but defends the breed as loving pets"

But she insists, "I have no regrets about that day," Faibish said.

Hmmmn! I don't like those dogs 1 bit. I must say I like less the people who seem to need to own them.

Once went out with a girl in Manchester whose family bred Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Believe, me, the day that two of them wandered into the front room while I was sat alone reading the paper was the day I decided she was dumped.

Still think I was lucky she never set them on me.

Well, I have a pit bull and I know that they are not inherently mean or crazy dogs who will snap one day -- though the media likes to make them out that way. Of course they are strong dogs and if not trained well can become aggressive towards humans, thought that's not in their nature. It's in their nature to be aggressive towards other dogs -- they were bred to fight dogs, not humans. But, that aggression towards other dogs can be curbed with the right training and socialization. (My dog was attacked once at a dog park, and that's the only time I've seen her aggressive towards another dog, and then it was just in defense -- both dogs are fine today, btw.)

Also, pit bull owners are not all crazy, like the woman in the article who chose to put her son in the basement instead of removing the dog the second it even hinted at being aggressive towards him. Of course that's what she should have done! I don't think anyone, pit bull owner or otherwise, would disagree. It's people like her and people who fight their dogs that give pit bull owners bad names.
