Final Scene*

Well, it wasn't to be. I don't agree with McFaddyen that the ref robbed us. Nah, he was just rubbish. Now, I don't usually comment on the performance of refs or their assistants - which infuriates the hell out of JJ, btw - but this one cannot go by without a few words. Italy should have been 2-0 up, but had a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside. Scotland's goal was well offside. And that free-kick at the end was simply not a free kick. At worst, it was a throw in for Italy. But, there we go.

World Cup qualifying draw takes place on Friday - bring 'em on!

Now that Scotland are out, I guess all you Caledonian chappies will rooting for England in our crucial game against Croatia. We need one team to fly the flag for the UK now that the Leek, Haggis and Shamrock munchers are out.

We had our annual soccer piss-up on Saturday p.m./night to watch Ireland v Wales, Scotland v Italy, and Russia v Israel. If it's any consolation, there was one pub in Dalkey full of Irish (and one Englishman) roaring on the Scots. That free kick was an utter disgrace, it has to be said, and the finals will be much the worse for Scotland's absence.

Far be it from me to provoke a stream of invective from Reidski, but was anybody else cheesed off by the media-promulgated assumption that everyone in England would, of course, be supporting Scotland? I know Reidski wasn't asking for our support, by the way. Eleanor Oldroyd (sp?) on Radio 5 said we should all support Scotland because Italy didn't "deserve to win". Evidently, she meant the country, not the football team.

Croatia has a population of 4.5m less even than that of Scotland. They are the underdogs. How can any Scottish neutral not support the plucky underdogs?

Mind you, I wouldnt go on JJ's blog and say this :-)
